Gone are the days when you could apply for a random 1-year diploma at a private college and easily get a visa. The Canadian Government has introduced strict International Student Caps and Provincial Attestation Letters (PAL) to control numbers.
But there is a "Golden Exemption" that most students don't know about.
If you are a serious student with a Bachelor's degree, 2026 is actually the BEST time to apply—provided you choose a Master’s Degree.
Here is why the Master’s pathway is the smartest migration strategy for Nepali students this year.
1. You Are Exempt from the "Student Cap"
This is the biggest advantage. While undergraduate and diploma students must fight for a limited number of "Attestation Letters" (PAL) from the province, Master’s and PhD students are EXEMPT.
- No PAL Required: You don't need to wait for the province to release a slot.
- Higher Visa Success: The government wants high-skilled graduates. A Master’s application is viewed as "low risk" compared to a diploma.
2. The "Spouse Visa" Privilege
In 2026, Canada removed the Spousal Open Work Permit (SOWP) for spouses of undergraduate and college students.
- If you study a Diploma: Your spouse cannot come with you on a work permit.
- If you study a Master’s: Your spouse IS ELIGIBLE for an Open Work Permit.
If your goal is to settle in Canada as a couple, a Master’s degree is now the only viable route.
3. Guaranteed 3-Year Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)
Previously, a 1-year course only got you a 1-year work permit. The New Rule: Graduates of Master’s degree programs (even if the course is less than 2 years) are now eligible for a 3-Year PGWP. This gives you maximum time to gain Canadian work experience and increase your CRS score for Express Entry.
4. Why "College Agents" Can't Help You
